St. John the Evangelist
Church of England -
Serving Christ in the heart of Blackpool St John's Church has it's own extensive Website. Please take time to visit the site HERE. Below are opening hours for the church and also information relating to St John's Primary School. The clergy are closely involved with the school and lead worship once a week. The school holds services in church for the main festivals and the leavers' service. Pupils and staff attend special Sunday services at St. John's occasionally, offering music by the choir or readings; these occasions offer the opportunity for contact with parents. The conregation of the New Wine outreach service is largely made up of school families and the church often advertises through the school newsletter or by sending flyers home with pupils. St John's church is the Foundation of the school which has Voluntary Aided status, appointing 8 out of the 14 Governors. The incumbent is an ex-officio member of the Governing Body and, although in many church schools he/she takes the role of Chair, St John's has had a lay Chair of Governors for the past 12 years. The Governors take a pro-active role in the support and management of the school.
St John's School has a body of Trustees which manages a Trust Fund. Income from investments has in the past paid for Governors' 10% of building work, provided extra finance for various projects around the school and financed the work of St John's Church for children and families. The school is currently housed in temporary accommodation, the old building has been demolished and a new build on the same site is due for completion in 2009. The Diocese is the prime mover in the project which has firm support from the Blackpool Local Authority and Blackpool Council, and we employ a Project Manager. The building is funded by a government grant, with the governors' 10% being met by a grant from the Trustees, a loan from the Diocese and fundraising by the 'Friends of St. John's School' spearheaded by the Governing Body. This encompasses St. John's Church, Parents and old pupils, and the wider Christian community in Blackpool town centre.
The Church building is open Monday - Friday 11am - 1pm
