The fundraising for the new school building is managed by the “Friends of St. John’s School” spearheaded by the Governing Body; this encompasses St. John’s Church, school staff, parents and old pupils, the business community and the wider Christian community in Blackpool town centre. We have charitable status so that we can claim tax back on donations. Before the old school closed we held an Open Day inviting former pupils to say a fond farewell to the school building. And what a day it was! The oldest guest we had attended our school in 1918 and there were former pupils from every decade since then, wandering around and meeting up again with old friends. The new building is funded by Government Grant, but while that supplies the bricks and mortar, we have to work together to build the school! In our first two years since the “Friends” was founded we achieved our target of £10,000 each year and the school is already reaping the benefit in its new home. The stained glass window which was our original focus for fundraising will be in place during November. In 2010 our target is again £10,000, with which we are planning to build up the school library for the benefit of the children, and we are already on the way to achieving that - We have promises of regular Gift-Aided donations, an annual £3,000 contribution from St. John’s Church, and a programme of events
Last year our events included: Autumn concert season - One Voice Choir concert and Carols by Candlelight at St. John’s Church Beetle Drive & hotpot supper at St. Mark’s church A special service at St. John’s Church led by Bishop Nicholas with the school choir, and lunch, supported by members of other local churches. Come to the Cabaret - our summer event at the Masonic Hall, Adelaide Street. …. As well as many events organised by staff and pupils
Our current focus is on our Celebration Week:
Monday 30th November: Dedication Service with Bishop Nicholas for invited guests. Tuesday 1st December: Open evening for members of the public – 3.30 – 6.00. Please phone the school to register for this event. Visit the rooftop playground with views towards North Wales, Yorkshire and Cumbria, see the Big Wheel and the Tower from a different viewpoint!
